A joy of a release.
Luke, Matt and I sat in the round in the Evanston warehouse, tracked everything in open experimental improvised form with the prompt to play our instruments unconventionally.
We tracked the room as well as the instruments. Lots of really great sounds and very unique textures.
Production followed suit where I waited a long time to track outboard processing so I’d forget a lot of the particulars of the song. Then: any extra “effects” or textures would be improvised and “performed” on the gear.
The Monologues
One night Jon and I had a few tepid glasses of “blindness-inducing” wormwood infused brandy out of his black bottle, and he improvised the monologues from the central questions governing the project:
- When was the last time you peed in a lake?
- How would you feel if someone peed in your lake?
Reflections
Ultimately, I think there probably just wasn’t that broad an audience for this as a set of one off ambient pieces. I probably shot us in the foot a bit with the name. It’s a great record though: beautiful, weird, and rich with hard to place emotions. Feels like walking through someone else’s dream, stepping between waking and unconscious worlds.
