Audition
An overhaul of a 60's Teisco Audition
This guitar has had the longest route to success of anything I own!
I bought it (along with two other Teiscos) back in 2011/2012ish. All three were $30 TOTAL (Nobody wanted off-brand offset guitars back then, even finding something like a Jazzmaster in a mid-sized shop was unusual). I gave two away and kept this one with the intention of making it into something. It played pretty well, but it didn’t get a ton of use.
Fast forward to 2021. I’d dragged it across several states, but still hadn’t used it much. I decided it would be my testing ground for my first refret, which I did in my class at Specimen’s Chicago School of Guitar Making. (It took FOREVER because of the binding, but the neck was in decent shape by the time I was done).
What made it
A couple of years after that, my friend Nat took a look at it and offered to put some work in. She dropped in a rubber bridge, a set of flatwounds and did a baritone setup on it. Now it’s my favorite guitar! We’ve since patched the broken pickguard, and I intend to replace the tuners with Schaller locking ones once I wrap my current album sprint.
It’s very light and extremely unique. It does an incredible violin pizzicato impression on the higher notes, and has the great “western” regular rubber bridge sound on the lower end.
